Our Roots

In loving memory of our founder, Joseph J Oakes III.​​

 

Born on June 29, 1942, in Pennsylvania, Joseph J Oakes III grew up in Narberth, a close-knit suburb of Philadelphia. He later lived in Atlanta, Georgia, and Boston, Massachusetts, before settling in Summit, New Jersey, in 1968.

 

Joe graduated from St. Joseph's University in 1964 and continued his involvement as a proud alum, basketball enthusiast, former trustee, recipient of the Haub School Hall of Fame, and Shield of Loyola. Joe began his professional career in insurance, earning the title of President of Profesco, a division of John Hancock. In 1986, he became a General Agent for John Hancock Insurance in New York City and started an independent firm called Acorn Financial Services. With a deep passion for helping others navigate life’s financial complexities, his commitment to service and trust laid the foundation that his sons continue to build upon.

Summit would become the cherished home where he and his beloved wife, Lynne, raised their four children, Kelly, Joe IV, Kristin, and Bill. Yet before his children were born, Joe was heavily involved in the community, coaching basketball and mentoring the local youth. He continued his service by volunteering as a coach for his children’s sports teams. 
 

Joe had a remarkable ability to connect with people. Whether it was through his work, his parish, or his community, he was known for his warmth, generosity, and unwavering dedication to others. Acorn Financial Services continues to serve our customers with the same commitment, kindness, and professionalism Joe III taught us.
